A successful minor ball season wound up this past weekend with a meeting at RJ's Motel on Sunday night. A total of 71 kids played minor ball this year, which is only down three kids from the previous year. While a decrease isn't usually a good sign, president Katie Kawerski was pleased, as it appears that fastball is pulling out of a downward spiral that has seen decreases of up to 60 kids per season over the past six years. At Sunday's meeting, only one major change was discussed. For next season, kids wishing to play on a rep team (a team representing Flin Flon at out-of-town tournaments) must be registered with minor ball. Previously, kids did not have to be registered with minor ball to play on a rep team. Financially, minor ball is in good shape, with over $20,000 in the bank. Due to bad weather for the last two weeks of the season, the wind-up tournament was canceled. Instead, teams will have individual parties this week. Also, because there was no wind-up tournament this year and few volunteer opportunities, the $20 fundraising deposit checks will not be cashed. Finally, the minor ball executive has many vacancies. Virginia Leifso will be returning as treasurer, and is the only returning member. Katie Kawerski has expressed a desire to step down after this season, and Tim Babcock has agreed to take over on an acting basis. Katie has been on the executive for 12 years, and will be officially handing over the job in the fall. Minor ball is still looking for a secretary and two additional executive members.
