Flin Flon Badminton players have been busy honing their skills over the past few weeks. On March 9-11, Celine Leclair, Holly Rainville and Danielle Lam represented the NorMan Regional at the Manitoba Games in Portage. All of the players fared well against some of the best under 18 players in the province. Celine and Danielle defeated the team from Central Manitoba in their last match to capture bronze medals at the event. Hapnot Collegiate held their second "Bird Bash" March 19-20. Friday night saw the singles competition with 16 participants. Noel Fernandes defeated Jan Deans to take top spot in the Men's singles competition. Rob Abbott defeated Travis Dominey in a hard fought Bronze medal game. Rhiane Rodnisky emerged as the top female singles player, with Holly finishing second. Saturday, the doubles competitions took place. Twenty-two athletes participated. Noel teamed up with Brian Rainville to win the men's side. Dean Grove and Jan defeated Joey Rideout and Austin Whitford in the Bronze game. Holly and Rhiane claimed the women's title, with Mackenzie Grove and Esa Fernandes finishing second. In mixed competition, the teams of Noel and Esa and Aimee Deans and Jan emerged as the top teams. This competition was a tune up for our Hapnot athletes who begin their high school season following the spring break. Upcoming events include the Hapnot Invitational Tournament April 9-10, the Melfort Open April 16-18, The Reston Invitational April 23-24 and the Zone tournament in The Pas on April 20-May 2nd. Provincials this year will be held in Winnipeg on May 7-8.
