Nothing says back to school better then a nice bright shiny red apple being pitched to you to over the pitcher's mound. On Friday, Hapnot Collegiate took baseball to a new level. They called it Apple Shmeare. Student council organized Apple Day, which along with Apple Shmeare, had a bake sale and baking contest. Student council advisor Corinne Mathews says the Apple Day is "all about school spirit." She says "it's to get the kids relaxed and back into school with fun." This marks the first year for Apple Shmeare, but Mathews says she hopes to see it continue over the years. "It just sounds like it's going to be a good day." Mathews says this year's student council is active and fun and this is just the start of the year. "We've got lots of things planned for the year. We're going to a leadership conference next week and the first week of October is Spirit Week, so we've got some things planned for that," says an excited Mathews. Aside from the shmearing of apples, students also had the opportunity to show off their baking skills. "Everything must contain apples," explains Mathews. The whole Apple Day concept is just a fun way to get kids and their school spirit going. "We're hoping to have a good response and do it all again next year," says Mathews. The thought of smashing apples might have some people concerned at safety or things getting out of control, but Mathews says she had no fear of anything going wrong. "We've got some prizes for the person who catches the most apple pieces, and people are going to be running around with garbage bags catching the pieces. And," she says, "I have no fear of it getting out of control." Mathews emphasizes the importance of the day as "it's just for fun and we're excited to get an early start on things this year." Apple Day took place at Hapnot Collegiate and Queen's Park on Friday at lunch time.
