Creighton Community School gym is opening its doors for a weekend basketball seminar as students in grades 6-12 will learn the fundamentals of the game from a Lakelands College coach. Davis Harmon, the assistant coach at the college, will be spending Saturday and Sunday at the school gym with the basketball players. Ryan Gray, with the school, says out of a possible 90 spots, 55 have been filled so far. ÒItÕs open to all students in Saskatchewan and Manitoba,Ó he says, adding that although there has been an interest heard from as far as La Ronge and Hudson Bay, he expects to see mainly local students. ÒBut there are students coming from Sandy Bay, Cormorant and Cranberry Portage.Ó The basketball camp is the first for the town. Gray says it was after talking with his son and coaches throughout the year that the idea came into play to host the camp. As of Monday afternoon 55 spots had been claimed. The camp will see three groups throughout the weekend. One group will be devoted to the girls, which only had two spots remaining at the start of the week, and two groups for the boys. With 15 spots remaining in both the JV, which is grades 6-8 and another 15 left for the V, grades 9-12, Gray says things were filling up quickly. ÒEach session,Ó he says Ògets a total of six hours (on the court). There are two two hours sessions on Saturday and one two hour session on Sunday.Ó As expected Gray is seeing more junior varsity players signing up, but he says, thatÕs a good thing. ÒIt works out for the programs...with younger students interested,Ó he says, adding that with getting the students interested early on gives the program more strength over the years. Gray also says coaches are welcome to come to the camp over the weekend. ÒCoaches are welcome to come and watch and ask questions,Ó he says.
