Congratulations to the Flin Flon Eddie's Atom A Bombers on winning the Atom Rural City A Provincial Championships in The Pas on March 11 and 12. The boys opened the weekend against Swan Valley, where they faced a hot goaltender, but with hard work and persistence they were rewarded with a 5-3 victory. Next up was the Morden Hawks, who had no answer for the tenacity of the Bombers' forecheck or the goaltending of Chase Pabianek. Our boys finished 3-1 and first place in round robin play. This would see them play the Portage Terriers. In a game that saw great goaltending Riley Rachuck and the Bombers prevailed with a goal by Tyler Morran with 49 seconds remaining. This would set up the gold medal showdown between Eddie's Bombers and the Thompson King Miners. This game would feature outstanding goaltending at both ends along with hard work and heart that would make every hockey fan proud. The second period came to a close deadlocked at 0-0. The third period started the way the first two ended with both teams grinding it out for every inch of ice, only to be met by great goaltending at either end. This battle went back and forth until Thompson finally opened the scoring with a wrist shot to the stick side under the crossbar. The Bombers quickly responded 90 seconds later with a goal by Blake Wallaker to even it up again at 1-1. Thompson once again took the lead with about five minutes remaining. Not to be denied this day, the Bombers - showing the same hard work and pride that had gotten them to this point - tied the game again with 1:28 remaining and forcing overtime. The first overtime solved nothing and the teams returned to the ice again for the second overtime period. After a close call in the Bomber end, Austin Carriere was stopped on the first shot but in fine Bomber style never quit. He picked up his rebound and fired it in off the crossbar for the victory. Helping the Bombers have success was a pep talk from Bomber players Brett Needham, Jared Kissick, and Zane Kalemba. We would like to acknowledge The Pas Minor Hockey for a great weekend. Well done! The boys, their parents and all Bomber fans should be very proud of the accomplishments of this team, which saw them grow not only as hockey players but as young men.
