Congratulations to Heather Bergin, the Chicken Chef Athlete of the Week. Heather was nominated by the executive of the Flin Flon Skating Club for her accomplishments in Portage la Prairie on the weekend of February 18-20 at the Manitoba Open. Heather won gold in the Junior Ladies Free Skate, and also took the bronze in the Silver/Gold Ladies Short Program, Gold Creative Skills and Junior Silver Spins. "Heather can be very proud of her accomplishments," said coach Carla Wabick. "She skated against skaters who were Junior Competitive Skaters and did very well." Heather started skating once a week with the Creighton club when she was five years old. Now at age 15, she logs around eight hours of ice time each week with the Flin Flon Skating Club, as she has for the last two years. Heather started competing at age 12, and in her second competition won gold for her artistic skate and won the artistic trophy, the first time it had been won by a skater from the Flin Flon/Creighton area. Last year at Regionals she won the Danielle Bartlett Memorial Bursary for the best freeskate, and was the Provincial Senior Bronze Gold Champion at Provincials. This year Heather is entering into the world of competitive skating, the first step towards her goal of skating competitively at the National level.
