Last Friday, Dec. 4, the Bombers shut out Estevan 6-0 at the Whitney Forum. Zac Robidoux made 32 saves to record his second shutout of the season.
Assistant coach (and temporary head coach) Gary Childerhose said that Robidoux was sharp and bailed the Bombers out at times.
On Saturday, Dec. 5, also at home, Flin Flon trailed Estevan 1-0 at the end of the first period.
However, the Bombers scored four goals in the second and third periods and posted an 8-3 victory.
Childerhose said the team got a good performance from goalie Brenden Newton, who made 37 saves.
Newcomer Rylee Zimmer, acquired just before the Dec. 1 roster cutdown date, scored twice and recorded three points for the Bombers.
“His skill level is off the charts,” Childerhose said. “He is a hard worker. He finishes his checks. … He is a good fit in Flin Flon.”
Jason Lavallee had five points, including four assists, against the Bruins, while Josh Hayward scored his third goal of the weekend.
Childerhose said Hayward’s success has come from “just taking advantage of opportunities, being ready when called upon, and having a great attitude.”
All weekend long Flin Flon’s top line of Alex Smith, Brandon Switzer and Joel Kocur was dominant, Childerhose emphasized. They combined for 14 points.
Kocur scored twice against Nipawin, while Smith had four assists. Switzer had two goals on the weekend.
Robidoux departed for Calgary over the weekend for the Team West tryout camp in Calgary, for the World Junior A Challenge.
With the veteran away, Flin Flon called up Chantz Vinck from the Pilot Butte, Sask.-based Traveland RV Storm of the Prairie Junior Hockey League to back up Newton.
