The Notre Dame Hounds, Yorkton Terriers and Kindersley Klippers were the class of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League through October 3. Notre Dame had six straight wins and a 6-1-0 record for second place in the Sherwood Conference, one point behind Yorkton. Yorkton had three consecutive wins and was 6-0-1. Defending league and Anavet Cup champion Kindersley won two games away from home, against the Nipawin Hawks, among three wins in three games during the week. Kindersley has a four-game winning streak and led the ITECH Conference, at 6-1-1. Veteran goalie Chance Gieni made 37 stops in 56 minutes and 11 seconds October 1 in Notre Dame's 2-1 win over the Humboldt Broncos on home ice in Wilcox. Goalie Jonathan Meyer stopped 57 of 59 shots in 123 minutes and 46 seconds in Kindersley's 3-1 win and 2-1 overtime win, respectively, September 28-29 in Nipawin. Meyer had 35 saves in the overtime win. Veteran Troy Schwab scored three times and added one assist October 2 in Kindersley's 6-3 win over the Melville Millionaires on home ice. Goalie Nathan Fischl made 28 stops September 29 in Humboldt's 2-0 win in Melville. Schwab is tied for the league lead, with linemate Josh Sim, with 16 points in eight games. Sim leads the league with 10 assists. Dan Bauer of Nipawin leads league goalies with a 1.73 goals against average and .960 saves percentage in 243 minutes. The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League has handed down three game suspensions to two players involved in an altercation as time expired following Yorkton's 3-2 win over the Weyburn Red Wings on Saturday night. Terrier blueliner Dustin Nehring and Weyburn forward Rick Wood will each sit out games over the next week for being deemed agitators of fighting resulting in a potential line brawl. Nehring is suspended for games on October 6th, 8th, and 9th. Wood will be out on October 5th, 9th, and 10th. The Terriers and Red Wings are also both warned that future similar incidents could result in disciplinary action and/or fines. The Board of Directors of the Melfort Mustangs have announced that effective Monday they have terminated the services of Mike Zambon and Blaine Fennel as coaches of the Melfort Mustangs Hockey Association. The Board of Directors felt there was no other option but to change now. "This gives us a chance to secure new coaching staff early in the season, to turn around the hockey team. Making the change at this point, gives us the opportunity to turn the season around," said Kelly Copeland, president of the Mustangs. "We want to acknowledge the contribution that Mike and Blaine have made to the Mustangs. They have been a proud part of our past." Effective Monday, the new head coach and director of hockey operations of the Mustangs will be Darrell Mann. Darrell comes to the Mustangs from the Tisdale Trojans and brings with him a very successful career in the 'AAA' midget program.
