With the NHL season now nearly a quarter of the way done, here is a look at how each of Canada's six squads have been faring. Montreal Surprise, surprise. The Canadiens are having trouble lighting up the red lamp. Just four teams have scored fewer goals than the Habs this season, a disappointing Ñ but not surprising Ñ stat. The good news is that they have been playing decent in their own end, and goaltender Jose Theodore appears to be coming out of an extended slump. Montreal holds the final playoff spot in the East with 17 points. Vancouver With a league-leading 57 goals, the Canucks' firepower has catapulted them to top spot in the notoriously tight Western Conference. The Canucks have garnered an impressive 24 points, losing just four times. Markus Naslund and Todd Bertuzzi continue to be a potent one-two punch, while. goalie Dan Cloutier has silenced his critics with a tremendous save percentage of .928. Ottawa What is supposed to be a championship season for the Senators has gotten off to a rotten start. Despite sitting in sixth place in both the goals-for and goals-against categories, the Sens have clicked for only 17 points, putting them in ninth place in the East. The main problem appears to be just bad luck, as Ottawa has been on the losing end of too many close games. It will be up to the supporting cast to ensure a brighter future. Toronto It's been a case of "could be better, could be worse" for the Leafs so far this season. Defensively, they've been atrocious, allowing the fourth-most goals in the league. Offensively, they're tied for 12th spot with 43 markers. Despite those unimpressive numbers, the aging Leafs are sitting in fifth place in the East with 20 points. Edmonton Could this finally be the year that the Oilers skate above the playoff borderline? There's little indication of that based on their performance so far. The Oilers are .500 and hold the familiar final playoff spot in the West. Scoring goals certainly hasn't been the sticking point, as their 48 goals are good for eight best in the league. Calgary Long-suffering Flames fans appear to be in for another long season. Calgary is off to a pitiful start, garnering just the fourth-worst record in the league with six wins. The Flames are tied with Pittsburgh for the fewest goals scored, and their top players haven't been firing on all cylinders. A bright spot has been defense. With 38 goals against, Calgary has allowed the ninth-fewest markers in the league. Note: These statistics do not include yesterday's games.
