The 2328 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps, of Flin Flon, is all set to begin a training year full of challenges and activities. The corps operates out of the Major Ben Grimmelt Army Cadet Training Centre located at 5 Timber Lane in the Flin Flon industrial park. Several of our cadets completed training at summer camp at Vernon, British Columbia. The aim of the army cadet movement is to promote citizenship, physical fitness, and leadership, as well as service to community and country. Plans for the upcoming training year include a trip to Winnipeg for a sports tabloid, swim parades at the local Aqua Centre, organized sports, field craft, bush survival, winter camping, map using, target shooting as well as other related subjects. A highlight of the yearÕs training plan will be courses on hunter safety, snowmobile safety, as well as safe boating. Training will continue until the spring of 2009 at which time cadets will have the opportunity of applying for summer camps. The Corps takes pride in our local area by participating in community projects. Over the past training year members participated in the Annual Remembrance Day ceremonies, completed the annual #10 highway cleanup, assisted the Knights of Columbus in fund raising to purchase a wheelchair for Chantal Harmon, and helped raise funds for Paige Harper to participate in a citizenship journey to South Africa under the World Youth Program - Canada. Cadets also refurbished and repainted the Legion memorial grave cross used at the community hall service each year on November 11. Our organization encourages cadets to do their best at school and offers a generous bursary at the Hapnot, Many Faces, and Pelican Narrows institutes. Monetary awards are also available for outstanding proficiency by individual cadets. In an age of computers, video games, cell phones, MP3Õs and instant messaging; itÕs even more important that young people get together in person to challenge their bodies and minds Ð and Army Cadets do just that! Parents and interested local citizens may also become involved with the Civilian Sponsoring Group and Parent Committee. The first training evening of the corps for the corps will be held on Wednesday evening, September 3 at 5 Timber Lane at 7 p.m. with parades (training evenings) every Wednesday evening thereafter throughout the training year. Young people aged 12 years and up and who are interested in experiencing the challenge of the army cadet program are invited to drop in any Wednesday evening or call 687-4936.
