A local slo-pitch team has claimed a national championship.

Just Evil earned the Co-Ed division ‘E’ title in a national level tournament held in Winnipeg last month.

“This is the first time I’ve ever won at nationals. It was great, it was so much fun,” said Denise Davis, a team member who was named the squad’s female MVP.

“I can tell you it’s more of a challenge. You’re playing against players that you never really play against, from teams across the country.”

The team was part of a northern takeover in the division: along with Just Evil, three clubs from The Pas took second, third and fourth place in the tournament. Just Evil faces all three teams regularly at regional tournaments.

Teams from Nelson House, Thompson and Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, also took part.

“We do have a very high standard of players. We just don’t get the chance to play at that level very often,” said Davis. “We represented the North quite well.”

Just Evil plays in the Flin Flon Slo-Pitch League and participates in several tournaments in Flin Flon and across Manitoba and Saskatchewan every summer. The team qualified for nationals by winning a Saskatchewan provincial title last year.
