Do you like swimming and having fun? Then the Flin Flon Aqua Jets (FFAJ) Swim Club may be for you. The FFAJ is the local competitive swim team and is open to both boys and girls Ð from elementary school to high school age Ð who want to improve their overall swimming ability and swim competitively. Why not give it a try? As the club gears up for a new season, there will be two try-it-free sessions at the Flin Flon Aqua Centre. Competitive swimming consists of four strokes: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. These strokes must be performed according to specified rules. Swimming with a swim club will teach you these strokes along with other competitive swimming skills such as diving and flip turns. Participating on a swim team is a great way to get in shape, make friends, and develop self-confidence, self-discipline and good sportsmanship. Swimmers also learn to set goals and work hard to achieve those goals. One of the best things about swimming with a swim club is the opportunity to travel to swim meets. A swim meet consists of a number of events swum either individually or as part of a relay team. Each event is a specified stroke swum over a certain distance (e.g. 100-metre freestyle). Travelling to swim meets throughout the year makes for great family time as well as an opportunity for the swimmers to show off newly acquired skills. Although each swimmer tries to win first place, the emphasis is more on beating their old personal best time. The cheering and support among the swim team is phenomenal. The FFAJ, which consists of both a pre-competitive (learn-to-swim) and a competitive program, provides training and competition opportunities to all swimmers consistent with ability, desire and performance levels. Swim practices are interspersed with fun swims and travel to swim meets. All levels of swimmers with the FFAJ have the opportunity to attend swim meets, including the pre-competitive swimmers. Although this group is non-competitive, from time to time these swimmers are encouraged to embrace competition, learning to race for the fun of it. Competitive swimmers who attain qualifying times can attend Provincial or even Interprovincial (ManSask) Championships. Back this year, as head coaches of the FFAJ, are Nicole and Doug Mack. They are excited about the upcoming season and are looking forward to welcoming new and returning swimmers. New swimmers should be able to swim one lap without assistance.
