With the Aqua Jets well into their season, the swimmers are making great strides and waves in pools around the province. The team made their way to Winnipeg recently for a meet. Aqua Jets coach Mark Fenske says everyone is improving every day. ÒIÕm just really proud of the kids,Ó says the two-year returning coach. ÒItÕs amazing to see how much they have improved.Ó Swimmer Garrison Aune was up against some tough competition in Winnipeg, but as he swam the lengths of the pool, he walked away with two 7th place spots and one 4th place. The 10-year-old has been with the Aqua Jets for two years now and says he doesnÕt plan on stopping now. ÒI like swimming,Ó he says, Òand I like the competitive side.Ó The Flin Flonner swims his races against boys 10 and under. Aqua Jet Terri-Lynn Mack, 14, has been swimming for four years with team. Mack was able to shave three seconds off of her 100-meter butterfly swim, which she says she hadnÕt done for a while. ÒI just like the competitive part and the laps,Ó she says. ÒAnd itÕs good triathlon training.Ó Going to Winnipeg was another meet under the swimmers cap, which she says is always fun. ÒI like competing against people and meeting new ones (people).Ó But she attributes everything she knows to her coaches. Before the Easter weekend, the Aqua Jets held a mock meet at the Flin Flon Aqua Centre. The team missed out on a meet in The Pas so they held their own. Earlier in the season the teammates didnÕt want to compete against each other, but Fenske says that has all changed. ÒThey are a lot more used competing against each other,Ó he says. Although competition is a large part of the sport, Fenske says he has noticed improvements in each swimmer. ÒItÕs really encouraging as a coach,Ó he says. ÒWe had one swimmer who was barely able to swim the length of the pool and now is one of the best swimmers.Ó The Aqua Jets are on the move again with a meet in Saskatoon in April, and they will be hosting a meet at the end of May for the MB Summer games qualifying races.
