The AHL is returning to Manitoba with a familiar name.

True North Sports and Entertainment Ltd., owners of the Winnipeg Jets, announced Monday that its AHL affiliate will be called the Manitoba Moose.

The Moose, who left Winnipeg and became the St. John’s IceCaps in 2011, will begin playing at Winnipeg’s MTS Centre this fall.

Earlier this year, True North announced plans to relocate the Jets’ AHL affiliate from St. John’s to Winnipeg. It was not known whether the team would be called the Moose.

“The team’s new logos feature some slight improvements and modifications, but are based on those used by the Manitoba Moose franchise that previously played in Winnipeg for 15 years between 1996 and 2011 in both the IHL and AHL,” read a statement on the Jets’ website.

In other hockey news, Jets captain Andrew Ladd has been nominated for the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award.

The award goes “to the player who exemplifies great leadership qualities to his team, on and off the ice, during the regular season.”
