All this snow has many people up in arms, but skiers are in their glory. No wonder then that the Flin Flon Ski Club is enjoying so much success this winter. "We're in really good shape this year and we've got a lot of interest," says club president Tim Spencer. Spencer was on hand last Saturday as the club hosted an open house at its chalet, inviting residents of all ages to learn more about the exhilarating winter activity. The club sold over 20 memberships that day alone while representatives from Fresh Air Experience Ð a ski equipment dealer in town from Prince Albert Ð enjoyed brisk business. For Spencer, the allure of skiing is no mystery. "Skiing is a way to embrace winter," he says. "Winter is a big part of life up here and it lasts a long time, so you might as well do something constructive with it." The sport, he says, offers great exercise, beautiful surroundings, and positive social opportunities. And it's literally for anyone and everyone, with club members ranging in age from 10 to their 70s. This winter has been such a treat because skiers are out on the snow-packed trails weeks earlier than in recent years. "We've got wonderful trails here and there's all levels of challenge to them," comments Spencer. Just as exciting as the early snowfall are the many activities the club has coming up, including potluck suppers, moonlight ski sessions, and planned programs for children. If you're not quite sure if skiing is for you, the club is waiving trail fees for tomorrow, Dec. 9, to try and entice people to take up the activity.
