Jonathon Naylor Editor You wouldn't know it from their recent performance, but the Montreal Canadiens are the most successful franchise in the history of pro hockey. The Habs have captured a record 24 Stanley Cups throughout their long tenure, with the first coming in 1916 and the most recent in 1993. Their arch rivals in Toronto have the second-most Cups with 13. Eleven of those championships came when the team was called the Maple Leafs, between 1932 and 1967. The same franchise also captured Cups in 1918, when it was known as the Toronto Arenas, and in 1922, when it was called the Toronto St. Patricks. The Detroit Red Wings are next on the list with 11 championship banners dating between 1936 and 2008. The original Ottawa Senators club racked up an impressive 10 Stanley Cups in a relatively short time, between 1903 and 1927, before folding. The Boston Bruins have earned six Cups, between 1929 and 2011, but obviously will not repeat this year. The Edmonton Oilers have five Cups to their name, won between 1984 and 1990, an impressive feat considering they only joined the NHL in 1979. The two remaining Original Six teams _ the Chicago Blackhawks and New York Rangers _ have each hoisted Lord Stanley's mug on four occasions. The Hawks took their championships between 1934 and 2010, while the Blueshirts won between 1929 and 1994. Still in New York State, the Islanders also have four Cups, won consecutively during their dynasty years between 1980 and 1983. Three long-defunct teams from Montreal each have four Stanley Cups as well _ the Montreal Wanderers (1906 to 1910), Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) (1893 to 1903) and Montreal Victorias (1895 to 1898). Three Cups The Pittsburgh Penguins have three Cups from between 1991 and 2009. Also hoisting the Cup thrice are the New Jersey Devils, from 1995 to 2003. The Colorado Avalanche (1996 and 2001) are one of two active teams with two Stanley Cups. The other? The Philadelphia Flyers (1974 and 1975). Three long-defunct teams have two Cups each _ the Montreal Maroons (1926 and 1935), the Quebec Bulldogs (1912 and 1913) and the Montreal Shamrocks (1899 and 1900). Teams that have earned one Stanley Cup are the Anaheim Ducks (2007); Carolina Hurricanes (2006); Tampa Bay Lightning (2004); Dallas Stars (1999); Calgary Flames (1989); Victoria Cougars (1925); Seattle Metropolitans (1917); Vancouver Millionaires (1915); Toronto Blueshirts (1914); and Kenora Thistles (1907). Note that in the early days of the trophy, the Cup could be awarded more than once in the same year.
