After four seasons with the Flin Flon Bombers, Tyson Empey is taking his game south.
Empey, who captained the squad this past winter, has committed to play for Concordia University Wisconsin. The Falcons compete at the NCAA Division III level.
“We’re really excited for Tyson to continue this hockey while gaining an education,” Flin Flon head coach Mike Reagan said on the team’s website. “Emps was a great leader on this team, gave everything he could to try to win this community a championship. For that we will forever be grateful.”
Concordia University Wisconsin is located in Mequon, Wisconsin. There will be at least a couple familiar faces on campus when Empey joins the Falcons.
Current Bombers defenceman Mason Etter’s father, Greg, is the head football coach at the school. Also former Flin Flon teammate Brandt Weldon will be playing his senior season with the Falcons.
“I talked to [Weldon] and it just seemed like it would be a good fit for me,” Empey said, “They have a good business program, which is what I plan on taking, and they have a good, skilled team that I think I can help with my physical, meat-and-potatoes style of play.”
This past winter Empey captained Flin Flon to its first appearance in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League finals in 23 years.
He posted career highs with 14 goals and 29 points in 46 games. For his career, Empey recorded 34 goals, 46 assists, and 76 points in 184 games.
