Congratulations to Eric Skeavington, the very first Chicken Chef Athlete of the Week. Eric is a grade 9 student at Hapnot Collegiate, and is currently the star of the wrestling team. He has taken the gold medal in his weight category in the last two tournaments. In fact, at the tournament in Cranberry Portage, Eric wrestled in a class higher than his regular 69 kgs and beat them, too. "Eric has shown an extreme amount of dedication in coming to practice and being a leader on the team," said coach Mike Nychuk who nominated Eric for the honour. "He's really taken those extra steps to put in the extra time needed to succeed. He's in grade 9 and he's beating up on grade 12 kids that are in these tournaments." At the meet in Cranberry Portage, Eric wrestled an exhibition match against one of Thompson's best grapplers. Eric was down 8-6 with 10 seconds left, and pulled a big 'double leg' to knock him on his back to score three points. Coach Nychuk expects that Eric will win a medal at Zones in Thompson this February 25 and 26, and then advance to Provincials, which will also be in Thompson. Although a medal for the up-and-coming star might be a surprise at Provincials this year, down the line Nychuk knows he has the potential to be provincial champion. Eric wins himself a 9" pizza or two piece chicken dinner from Chicken Chef.
