The Brier final wasn't the only source of curling excitement over the weekend. Forty-three rinks entered the 73rd Annual Flin Flon Ladies Bonspiel, but by the time the final ends were played Sunday, only four teams took home a trophy. "I think it was really good curling," said Debbie McNeill, vice-chair of central governing for the bonspiel. "All the women out there certainly used all the skills they had to complete their jobs." In the Faktor's Fashions Event, the Sawkey rink Ð skip Lesia Sawkey, third Angela Trombo, second Elaine Murray and lead Nettie Stadnyk Ð defeated the Limoges rink. The Edworthy rink of skip Sharon Edworthy, third Jayne Watt, second Jan Rodnisky and lead Cathy Davidson came out on top in the HBMS Event, beating out the Rice rink. The Nordmark Realty Event champ was the Evans rink of skip Patty Evans, third Barb Groff, second Cindy Rainville and lead Charlene Rutley. They bested the Black rink. The Palmer Rink Ð skip Joann Palmer, third Cathy Moore, second Rhonda Scott and lead Angie Gryba Ð took the Pharmasave Event by downing the Abele rink. McNeill gave local businesses a pat on the back, saying they once again came through with solid support for the long-standing Flin Flon tradition. McNeill said the turnout of spectators could have been better, but this was, after all, the weekend of the Brier final on CBC. The oldest curler to participate was 86-year-old Nettie Stadnyk of Winnipeg, the lead for the Faktor's Fashions Event champion Sawkey rink. One spectator marveled at the curler's talent and vitality, saying she didn't miss a single shot over the weekend.
