6-2 road loss a missed opportunity for Bombers

The Melfort Mustangs continue to have the Flin Flon Bombers’ number, beating them for the fifth time this season on Wednesday. Melfort scored four times in the third period en route to a 6-2 victory at the Northern Lights Palace.

The Melfort Mustangs continue to have the Flin Flon Bombers’ number, beating them for the fifth time this season on Wednesday.

Melfort scored four times in the third period en route to a 6-2 victory at the Northern Lights Palace.

It was Flin Flon’s fourth regulation loss of the season, and three of them have come against the Mustangs.

Alex Smith scored a power play goal for the Bombers in the second period to tie the game at 1-1.

By the time Chris Rauckman notched a shorthanded goal in the third period, it was a 5-2 game.

Flin Flon scored one power play goal on five chances, while holding the Mustangs scoreless on their four tries with the man advantage.

Shots on net were 48-30 for the Mustangs.

It was a missed opportunity for the Bombers, who now trail the Mustangs by four points but have two games in hand. They will play each other two more times this season, with both games coming after the Christmas break in Flin Flon.

The Bombers will have a chance to redeem themselves tonight at the Whitney Forum, as they host the league-leading Kindersley Klippers.

Kindersley will be looking for a little redemption themselves, as they lost 4-0 the last time they were in Flin Flon.

Tonight promises to be one of the most exciting games of the year. Not only will two of the league’s top teams go head to head, but it is also the fourth annual Northland Ford Teddy Bear Toss.

Don’t forget to bring a bear so when the Bombers score their first goal, you have something to throw on the ice. There also will be drop boxes available for non-tossable toys for children in need.

Tomorrow night, the Estevan Bruins will be in town. The Bruins struggled out of the gate this season but have been playing better as of late, going 5-4-1 in their last 10 games.

Estevan was busy at the Dec. 1 roster deadline, when teams had to cut down to 25 carded players. They sent two players to the MJHL’s Portage Terriers in exchange for future considerations. The Terriers are hosting the 2015 Royal Bank Cup, and are obviously building up for that.

Expect some good players to be coming Estevan’s way in return in time for the 2016 season, as the Bruins will be hosting the Western Canada Cup.
