The Flin Flon Ski Club's longest standing tradition is set to take place this Sunday. This year's event will mark the 30th Annual Centaloppet. The event was inaugurated by Ivor and Val Hedman in 1976. The idea Ð inspired by the Scandinavian model Ð was to get all local skiers together just once a year to ski along an easy and enjoyable route. They could race if they wanted to, but the main idea was to be part of the crowd Ð to participate. These days, the event has a massed start on Ross Lake, and ends after a four-kilometer ski at the Chalet. The Centaloppet Cup goes not to the first across the line, but to an individual, young or old, male or female, whose time has been adjusted according to an ingenious handicapping system. At the time of writing, snow conditions are the best they have been for many years, and the Ski Club is anticipating an excellent turnout Ð including kids, their grandparents, and everybody in between. "The trails are in better shape this year than they have been for years, so we are hoping for a good turnout for the Centaloppet," said Dave Price. "This is a no-sweat (or minimal sweat) easy four kilometer ski for kids, their grandparents, and everyone in between. As usual, we hope that everyone in our area who has skis will want to be a part of this great event." The Ski Club even has skis available to rent for those who don't have any. There is no entry fee, but participants are asked to register at the Ross Lake market garden from 1-1:50 p.m. Start time is 2 p.m., so get out there, participate and leave hibernation to the bears! Also, on Saturday, February 19, the Ski Club invites you to a candle light ski and potluck For this event, the Club will put candles in glass jars around our 'Moonlight Loop' which is about one kilometer. To cover our costs and raise a few extra dollars for the club, they will have a silent auction. If you plan on attending, bring your own plates and cutlery as well as your favourite dish. The candle light ski will start at 8 p.m. If you have an item that you would like to donate forÊthe silent auction please contact Bonnie at 687-4263 or bring it with you to the potluck. The proceeds of the silent auction will be donated to the Flin Flon Ski Club.
