The Terry Fox Foundation has announced plans to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Terry's 1980 Marathon of Hope with an ambitious national school-based initiative. The Terry Fox National School Run Day is slated to take place on Friday September 16, 2005. All schools across Canada are invited to participate in a simultaneous fundraising event: from coast to coast. Canadian students would walk, run, roll or take part in other activities to raise funds for cancer research. In 2004, over 4800 schools in Canada held a Terry Fox Run for cancer research, a number representing almost one out of every three schools in the country. While communities in Canada all hold their Terry Fox Run on the same Sunday in September, schools traditionally have held their Terry Fox run on a date that is convenient to them during the school year. This September, for the first time, Canadian schools are being asked to synchronize their events. Last year, over 1 million students walked, ran, or wheeled in the Terry Fox Run. The Terry Fox National School Run Day could attract up to 6 million participants Ð making it possibly the largest single day event in Canadian history. "We invite all who dream of a world free from the suffering caused by cancer to help us celebrate Terry's legacy of determination, and to help ensure that strides in the fight against cancer continue," said Peter Sheremeta, one of the event organizers. Two days after the Terry Fox National School Run Day, the 25th Anniversary Terry Fox Run will be held in communities across Canada on Sunday, September 18, 2005.
