The 2005 Flin Flon Trout Festival Leo Lavoie Two Day Trout Tournament was held last weekend on Lake Athapap. Tournament Director, Dallas Mymko, said being a volunteer is frustrating sometimes, but when the weather is not co-operating and 100 per cent of all the 66 people entered in the tournament show up for both days, it keeps you going for another year. It was raining all day Saturday, and yet three teams showed up before 8 a.m. to register and join the other 30 teams entered to fish in the tournament. On Sunday, some of the competitors came in early due to the five- foot plus waves. Mymko said that a new fish measuring device was used this year, making it possible for the contestants to quickly measure their fish, take a photo, and get the fish back into the water quickly, to keep it healthy. Something rare happened this year, where the leaders of the first day went on to win the tournament after the two days of fishing were completed. However, they just barely edged out the second place team, winning by just one-half inch after their top eight fish were measured. Each day, competitors were allowed to enter their top four fish. Mymko also mentioned that about 30 per cent of the participants were women, and also that more and more of the participants are using digital cameras, making the measuring of the fish all that much more easier. As usual, Big Athapap produced lots of activity with lots of trout being caught and a good time being had by all.
