Kelly Carrington Staff Writer Athletes from Pelican Narrows, Deschambault Lake, Sandy Bay and Stanley Mission competed hard in the canoe races at the Saskatchewan Summer Games. They competed against the province's best canoers and kayakers at the Games, held in Meadow Lake from July 29-August 1. Each athlete from Team North earned at least one medal in the Games. In total, Team North brought home 18 medals. Celsey Merasty and Summer Stevenson earned Gold in the C2 2,000m race and C2 500m race on the first day of competition. Brandon Michel, Michael McCallum, Andrew Dorion and Daylen Merasty picked up Gold in the men's C4 race. On the second day, the team was just as successful as Michel and McCallum, of Pelican Narrows, picked up Gold in the men's C2 2,000 race and 4,000 m race. By the end of the day, Team North had four Gold and one Silver and one Bronze medal. On the final day of the canoe races, the team of Michel, McCallum, Dorion, Merasty, Cord Custer, and Denzel Robillard picked up Gold in the voyageur race. Heading into the Games, the athletes trained with dedication in their home communities. With this year's Games complete, some are already looking forward to next year's First Nation Games. Ryan Karakochuk of Northern Sport, Culture and Recreation says some of the athletes even have a future in the Western Games.
