A Hapnot Collegiate student has been recognized as a role model Ñ and no one was more surprised than her. Amanda Quinn, 17, of Flin Flon has won this year's Healthy Youth Role Model Award from the Flin Flon Community Youth Resource Centre and CADAC. "I'm speechless. I don't have any words. I'm shocked," smiled the teen after accepting her award yesterday. "It feels great, I don't even know how to describe it." Amanda's award consists of $50, a gift basket, a personalized plaque, and a plaque that will be displayed at her school until next year's winner is named. To be eligible for the award, she had to meet certain criteria, most notably having involvement in extracurricular activities and being drug-free. Even though teenagers tend to come up against strong peer pressure, it's been easy for Amanda to steer clear of drugs. "I just felt that it was stupid so I didn't do it," she said. In her spare time, Amanda enjoys playing the piano, drawing, doing homework, listening to music and spending time with friends. After graduating from Hapnot this June, she plans to attend college to become a nurse. Amanda was one of four nominees for the Healthy Youth Role Model Award. Receiving honourable mention certificates were Hapnot students Stacey Anderson, 17; Jesse Koehnlein, 16; and Mike Pierangeli, 17.
