A Creighton Community School student has been recognized as a community role model ? and no one was more surprised than him. Walter Olson, 15, of Denare Beach has won this year's Healthy Youth Role Model Award from CADAC and the Flin Flon Community Youth Resource Centre. "I'm surprised," he said. Walter's award consists of $50, a gift basket, a personalized plaque, and a plaque that will be displayed at his school until next year's winner is named. The most notable criteria for the award were being drug-free and involved with extracurricular activities. "I play volleyball and when the time comes, I play basketball and badminton," noted Walter. The grade 9 student is also an avid sled dog musher. That must run in the family, as his father, Jimmy Custer, is a well-known musher. "We race and we train," said Walter. "Last year, we didn't race too much, but usually we're in around 20 races. We go all over ? the Northwest Territories, B.C., Alberta, but mostly Saskatchewan and Manitoba." The role model is still unsure which career path he will take upon graduating from high school, though he is thinking about becoming a police officer or an ambulance driver. Whichever route he goes, the Healthy Youth Role Model Award is a sure sign that Walter's future is indeed a bright one. Receiving honourable mentions for the award were Chris Sweryda of Flin Flon, Jeffrey Dubois of Cranberry Portage and Jordan Dumenko of Creighton. They were among 42 nominees for the award.
