What does it mean if the motorcyclist in front of you lowers her left arm at a 45 angle, with her hand open, palm down? What does it mean if a biker stretches out a leg and points to the ground with his foot? Riding a motorcycle in traffic is a skill that has to be learned. So, before you roar off into the sunset, be sure to learn everything you need to know. Don't neglect the maintenance of your motorbike. Your safety is worth the price! Tires, brakes, lights, rear view mirrors, and even the horn should be checked before each outing. Be on the alert for unusual vibrations, noises you've never heard before, and leaks Ñ they all require attention. Treat yourself to the best when choosing your helmet. Any expert will tell you that you are three times more likely to get a head injury if you don't wear one. Even more persuasive: your helmet could even save your life if you're involved in an accident. Clothing is also important. The better leather jackets have built-in protection in the elbows, shoulders, and back. Wear gloves, and don't even think about riding in sandals or running shoes. Always wear boots that cover your ankles. Lastly, learn to recognize communication symbols. The biker who lowers her arm is encouraging you to slow down; the one who points to the ground with his foot is indicating an obstacle. There are several other signals you should learn in order to make riding easier and safer for you and the others around you.
