Hapnot Collegiate students studied much more than reading, 'riting, and 'rithmetic this week. Wednesday's Teen Survivor workshop, consisting of various sessions, taught teens personal skills and the importance of positive lifestyle choices. Session topics included healthy relationships, stress, and self-image. One of the organizers, Sandra Garinger, said the idea "was to get students to think a little bit about some of the things that are going on in their lives and the impact those things have on their lives." Organizers strived to make the sessions as interactive as possible. For the sessions on relationships, for instance, students participated in a Jeopardy!-type quiz. Conducting the sessions were staff from Hapnot as well as a number of community organizations, including Mental Health, Public Health, Addictions Foundation of Manitoba, CADAC, and the NOR-MAN Regional Health Authority. Garinger said the students and presenters with whom she spoke felt the workshop was a positive experience for the youth. A committee including representation from around the community organized the workshop, having started their planning last November. All Hapnot students in attendance Wednesday morning took part in the workshop.
