Major construction and renovation work is underway at Creighton Community School to accommodate more students and enhance the learning environment. The work consists of several different projects, some major and others less so, with a total price tag of approximately $1.76 million. "It's progressing," said principal Guy Row, who toured the hallways yesterday as they buzzed with the noise of power tools. The centrepiece of the project is the addition of three new classrooms and a state-of-the-art science lab, all of which will be used by the school's high school program. The new rooms, to be built on the second storey of the northeast corner of the school, are expected to be completed next April and will not be utilized until September 2005. The extra space will come in handy with some 100 new students set to remain for grades 10, 11, and 12, which will be phased in one grade at a time starting this September. Several other changes are being made this summer to better utilize existing space. The resource centre, or library, for example, will absorb a former classroom and be about 40 per cent larger as a result. The main office will move to the west side of the school and double in size to include two vice-principal offices and two tutorial rooms in addition to the principal's office and general office area. The former main office will become home to the student and family services suite, complete with offices for the vocational counselor, two personal counselors, and the community school coordinator. The little-used stage in the gymnasium will become a classroom, with a folding door to separate the area from the gym floor. New skylights will be installed in the fine arts room, which will now also accommodate the music program. The current music room will be utilized as a classroom. Roof maintenance and a cozy new resource room (for students who benefit from one-on-one instruction) are part of the project as well. To save money and electricity, the entire school is also being converted over to a more energy-efficient lighting system. Portions of the project other than the addition of the new classrooms are expected to be completed next month. Principal Row said the new classrooms represent the fourth expansion of the school since it opened in 1950.
