Having a place to stop in after work for a beverage or two isn't new to Denare Beach Ð but the Wooley Bully is giving residents a spin on the traditional pub. Giving customers a comfortable place to put their feet up after work Ð but not on the tables, of course Ð the Wooley Bully has been in operation since March. Along with the expected weekly drink specials and a refinished pool table, the pub-style atmosphere offers homemade chili on Thursdays, karaoke on Fridays and a meat draw on Saturdays. "It's been steady," says owner Elizabeth Wooley of the business. Wooley's husband, Randy, was born and raised in Flin Flon, but left for Alberta for four decades. After coming back over the years, a trip last summer put an idea in his head. While down for a family function, Elizabeth says she and Randy noticed a building Ð Raven's Roost Pub Ð was for sale. "We needed a change and the building was for sale," she says. After looking at their options, the couple decided to reopen the bar. Inside the Wooley Bully, which was conveniently named after their last name and their favourite song, Elizabeth also runs a travel agency. Once an agent in Calgary, she knew her business was mobile and started up again in Denare Beach. The Wooley Bully opened in March, but it wasn't just any opening as they had a logo contest for the first month. Customers had the option to vote on three logos Ð a raging bull, a bulldog or a wooly sasquatch. To no surprise, the raging bull is proudly displayed on the pub's bright yellow wall. Moving from Calgary to Denare Beach wasn't much of a culture shock to Randy, but Elizabeth says she is still getting used to it. But having family has helped make it easier, she says.
