Seven well-deserving women have been nominated for the 2005 Women of Honour Awards. The nominees are Shelly Craig; Marlene Gogal; Eileen Jessup; Biddy Leask; Isabel Mackie; Deb Odegaard and Diane Therien. The Women's Resource Centre, Flin Flon Friendship Centre and Body, Mind and Soul Committee will present Women of Honour awards in various categories at an upcoming luncheon. Here are excerpts from the biographies of each nominee, submitted by the nominators. * * * Shelly Craig "... has been an inspiration to those she works with, as well as all other community associates..." "... believes in education and has made sure that all staff are given the opportunity to pursue any educational opportunities that arrive..." "... a great role model for others and should be celebrated for addressing the needs in our community..." * * * Marlene Gogal "... a cherished volunteer who strives to make Flin Flon and area a better place..." "... speaks with conviction, is an advocate for community development and progress, always striving to make our community a better place for future generations..." "... is a role model, and an outstanding citizen who deserves to be recognized..." * * * Eileen Jessup "... has spent her life improving the lives of others and improving services in our community..." "... received the Decoration of Chivalry for the North Star Rebekah Lodge #31 and for community involvement..." "... is the unsung hero and continues to set an inspiring example for all of us..." * * * Biddy Leask "... was always active in this community and still is..." "... has always been a very generous person and has been known to donate funds for furnishing a room at Personal Care Home..." "... there is no end to the generosity of time Biddy gives..." * * * Isabel Mackie "... is my family's, your family's and many other families' neighbour..." "Whether Isabel is out in her garden... her caring and love grow through her to her yard..." "...is our guardian angel..." * * * Deb Odegaard "... takes time for the things that really matter to her and which she is passionate about, namely children, her faith, and the environment..." "... shines as an individual through her constant concern for and commitment to save the environment..." "... volunteers for various groups and her achievements are too numerous to mention..." * * * Diane Therien "... is affiliated with many different community projects and committees that better our community..." Channing Auditorium with Marlene Bertrand, director of the Winnipeg-based Family Violence Prevention Program, as guest speaker. Tickets are still available for the luncheon.
