A young mother has been handed a conditional sentence after pleading guilty to the 2003 stabbing death of her common-law husband in Pelican Narrows. Joanna Laurel Linklater, 21, can serve her sentence of two years less a day in her community, the Canadian Press reports. Linklater's lawyer had argued that her client meant to turn the knife on herself when she stabbed Joseph Jamie Merasty on Jan. 1, 2003, the news agency reports. Merasty was 22 years old when he died at the Flin Flon General Hospital not long after being stabbed, reportedly in the heart.
