An independent investigation will be carried out after a woman died in hospital while in custody of the Thompson RCMP. On Sept. 3, while in custody in Thompson, a 39-year-old female from Shamattawa, Manitoba, became ill. She was immediately transported by ambulance to the local hospital and, later, to hospital in Winnipeg. On September 7, the woman died in hospital. An autopsy has been completed, and results are pending. Although the woman died in hospital, as she was in police custody when she became ill, RCMP policy requires an independent investigation as an in custody death. The Saskatoon Police Service has agreed to oversee the matter, and have assigned an investigator. As the investigation is ongoing, police are releasing no further information at this time. Shamattawa is remote First Nations community in northeastern Manitoba, located on the banks of Gods River. In recent times it has received broad attention for its problems with suicide.
