More than $38,000 has been committed to date to support this year's winter festivals that celebrate the province's cultural diversity, encourage participation in winter recreation and provide enthusiastic outdoor entertainment for Manitobans of all ages, Culture, Heritage and Tourism Minister Eric Robinson has announced. "Manitoba's winter festivals are a valuable element in our tourism plan and play an important role in the lives of Manitobans," said the minister. "Festivals throughout the province are a traditional form of winter entertainment for hearty Manitobans. They include games and competitions, often based on early customs and historic ways of life like ice-fishing, snowshoeing, dog-sled racing, singing, dancing and, of course, traditional foods." Ten winter festivals received funding this year including the upcoming Canadian power toboggan races in Beausejour, Festival Manipogo in St. Laurent, Churchill Aurora Winterfest, Snow Lake Winter Hoot and the Mistatakamik Festival at South Indian Lake. Other festivals are the Carnival Ste. Anne, Lockport Children's Winter Festival, Grand Marais Winter Family Festival, Bust the Winter Blues Festival in Flin Flon and the Northern Manitoba Trappers' Festival which have already taken place. Support for the North includes: - Northern Manitoba Trappers' Festival Ð February 18-22, $20,000. - Bust the Winter Blues Festival Ð Flin Flon Ð February 13-15, $825. - Churchill Aurora Winterfest Ð March 20-28, 4,800. - Snow Lake Winter Hoot Ð March 12-14, $350. - Mistatakamik Festival Ð South Indian Lake Ð March 25-28, $650.
