Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) has some winter driving tips to keep people on the road and out of trouble this holiday season.

According to MPI, the first thing a driver should do is drive below the posted speed limit. The limits are posted for ideal conditions only.

Keeping space between your vehicle and any vehicles ahead is also a recommended move, along with making moves like braking, turning and accelerating gradually. Switching to winter tires and making sure vehicles are well maintained can be useful hints.

Once on the road, motorists are asked to give snow plows a wide berth, make sure they can see traffic clearly and to drive defensively, keeping an eye on any locations with heavy ice buildup.

In case things do go sideways, prepare by having a cold weather survival kit in the vehicle, keeping a well-charged cell phone in case of emergency calls and letting people know of travel plans in advance.
