Thanks to great support from neighbouring northern communities, Snow Lake has been named this year’s Manitobaville winner.

Along with the accolades comes $25,000 to be put toward enhancements in the community.

Mayor Kim Stephen heard the announcement Monday morning and was filled with excitement when she shared the news.

“I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “I was dancing!”

The community entered the contest with the intention of making upgrades to the local beach area. A video featuring residents and the area to be improved was sent to contest officials, one of 22 submissions from Manitoba communities.

“We made it to be a top 10 finalist and we were thrilled,” said Stephen.

The winner was selected based on votes from the public, and Stephen admits that she was worried going up against larger centres.

“We put ads in neighbouring northern community newspapers and reached out to them for help.”

The call for help was filed with the courts ahead of the August 21 date was agreed to by both sides, leading to the stay.

“This undertaking has the IAM having to follow the terms of the picket line protocol explicitly,” he said.

The next step will be to have the parties move to a Judicially Assisted Dispute Resolution (JADR). Those proceedings will be held in Flin Flon.

“This JADR is to discuss and resolve the differences between the parties regarding the picket line protocol,” said Winton, adding that it does not have any bearing on the collective bargaining process.

IAM was unavailable for comment at press time.
