The opposition NDP is accusing the Saskatchewan Party government of lacking a smart growth plan for public education as the province's population soars. 'The Sask. Party has underfunded schools and students,' said David Forbes, NDP education critic. 'There is no common sense in making cuts when there are more students in today's schools.' The NDP has been critical of the province's decision to utilize standardized testing. The party calls the testing outdated and says it will mire teachers in administration and data collection instead of teaching. The NDP also wants a cap on classroom sizes, something the Sask. Party has resisted, and is calling on the province to build more classrooms. Also drawing criticism was a reduction in the number of educational assistants province-wide. Students aren't getting the one-on-one attention they need, and classrooms are being disrupted while a lone teacher has to balance the needs of every student, argues the NDP.
