The Canada West Foundation has released a new economic indicator of labour demand that suggests western Canadian employers are in the mood to hire. The Job Opportunities Index - which counts the number of job openings posted on the Internet - is up over 20% from the first count taken in January of this year. In total, there were 2,688 want-ads in western Canada posted on Monster.ca, one of the country's most popular on-line career management portals. Based on January 2004=100, the index of job postings is up most sharply in Alberta (127.5), but it is also gaining in B.C. (123.6) and Manitoba (115.2). Saskatchewan is the only province in the west experiencing weaker labour demand than at the beginning of the year - its index value has slipped to 71.7. Job postings by sector are up most noticeably in construction and trades, finance and economics, and in professional and administrative positions.
