The Manitoba government has identified the province’s first human case of West Nile virus (WNV) this year.

The individual is a male in his 30s from the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, who experienced neurological symptoms.

He was most likely exposed to WNV in the Winnipeg area in midsummer. The investigation is ongoing.

The current risk for human exposure to WNV is low. In Manitoba, the main carrier of the virus is the Culex tarsalis mosquito.

For more information about West Nile virus, contact the province’s Health Links hotline at 1‑888‑315-9257 (toll-free), or visit www.gov.mb.ca/health/wnv/.
