Recently, 36 grade 7 band students took over Simonhouse Bible Camp for a weekend of music and fun. Joined by seven students and Doctor Wendy McCallum, a professor from Brandon University, the junior high students were able to spend quality time with professional musicians and get a head start on the band program. It was an excellent opportunity for both the junior high and university students. For the university students, all taking Music Education with Doctor McCallum at BU, many of them were able to get their first experience teaching young musicians how to play their specific instruments. The junior high kids benefitted from their lessons, and progressed at a higher rate than if they were to meet in larger groups in the classroom. The three-day camp was equivalent to approximately six weeks of classroom time. The kids also enjoyed activities such as beach volleyball, tether ball and the obstacle course, and were able to bond as a group early in the program.
