Kelly Carrington Staff Writer Who are you growing for? Men around town are sporting clean-shaven faces as the race is on to see who can grow the best mustache. Members of the Flin Flon Fire Dept., business owners and employees, and everyday residents are growing mustaches in support of the fight against prostate cancer. Movember is a month-long campaign that not only raises funds but has a visual reminder of the cause as well. Movember began surging in popularity in the local area last year as men from the school divisions as well as the fire department started to grow their facial hair for this good cause. Some business owners and their employees joined in, as did others wanting to join the fight. This year, The Reminder has teamed up with the Flin Flon Fire Dept. in encouraging all men to raise funds and grow a mustache for the month. Women are also encouraged to raise funds for the cause. The Reminder encourages everyone to make a minimum of a $25 donation to the Flin Flon Fire Dept.'s Movember website to support the fundraiser. Along with making a donation, check out the firefighters' profiles online as well! Tuesday night, hairdressers from The Mane Frame were on hand to shave off the beloved mustaches of three brave men. Business owner Dave Gunn had his familiar mustache removed for the first time since he was 20. Though he left the bottom part of his beard, the mustache is gone! Joining Gunn was Fire Chief Jim Petrie. The chief celebrated Movember last year as he had his mustache trimmed for the camera at Home Hardware. MLA Clarence Pettersen also braved the shave as he was barefaced after a matter of minutes. City of Flin Flon Councillor Ken Pawlachuk lost his mustache for the month _ as did Wayne Novak, owner of the Royal Hotel. When around town for the next month, be sure to ask participants who they are growing for. Watch next week's Reminder for the 'before' photos of more local businesspeople who are the bandwagon. Before the challenge was underway, the Flin Flon Fire Dept. had already raised nearly $900 for Movember. Movember officially started yesterday, Nov. 1, and will carry on for the next 30 days. Chance to win Those making a donation of at least $25 at the fire dept.'s Movember website earn the chance to win a $250 gift certificate from a sponsoring business of their choice. The website is www.mobro.co/fffd _ yes it's .co and not .com. Once you've made your minimum donation of $25, send an e-mail to [email protected] to let us know so we can enter you into the draw! Anyone, including guys not growing mustaches and women, can enter the contest. But we'd love for all the guys to sport a 'stache. Send The Reminder a picture of you and your mustache to [email protected] no later than Dec. 3 so we can publish it in a future edition!
