Saskatchewan Environment and the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority will be taking water samples at several spots on the North Saskatchewan River over the next few days. Heavy rains in the Edmonton region over the last couple of weeks resulted in combined storm water and raw sewage as well as an oily substance believed to be used oil or motor oil being released into the river. Preliminary testing by Environment Canada on the Alberta/Saskatchewan border on Tuesday shows the water meets Saskatchewan's Surface Water Quality Objectives for recreational use. "So far there has been no evidence that any oil has reached Saskatchewan and it is believed to have dissipated during the 300 kilometre distance from Edmonton to the Alberta/Saskatchewan border," Environmental Sciences Unit Manager Chuck Bosgoed said. Results of the sampling are expected to be available next week.
