Flin Flon RCMP are reminding motorists to be on the lookout for pedestrians. Police say they've been getting complaints of drivers not stopping at crosswalks for pedestrians. "It is that time of year again, when the weather gets colder and the streets get slicker, not to mention the children that are now back in school," read a RCMP press release. "The public must pay special attention to intersections and corridors where children cross as well as other pedestrians." The press release reminds that pedestrians have the right of way at crosswalks or intersections unless the red hand is flashing at the people on foot. The release points out that drivers who fail to yield the right of way to pedestrians at a corridor may face a $72 fine. Police also remind drivers that they may be charged with speeding if they travel through a crosswalk because they aren't able to stop in time. "Speeding includes driving too fast for the conditions," read the release. "This means that you can be traveling too fast even if you are not exceeding the speed limit." Police ask drivers to always consider the following factors: Weather. Weather may affect visibility and road conditions, meaning more time and distance may be needed to stop. Road surfaces. Pavement, gravel and ice will change the time and distance needed to stop. Time and location. Motorists need to be reasonable and prudent in school zones, near playgrounds and during rush hour. Drivers. Mood, fatigue, illness and distractions affect how a driver perceives and reacts.
