Clayton Sewap is apparently back as the Denare Beach representative and Peter Beatty is the new chief following last week's Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation council election. Though The Reminder was unable to obtain the vote tallies as of press time, paNOW reported Sewap was the winner in the unofficial count. Unofficial results also showed Deschambault Lake's Beatty was elected chief over Harold Linklater in the April 17 contest. Beatty told paNOW that one of his priorities will be exploring resource development. 'Speaking with the people that come in to extract our resources, we feel we should be getting some benefit from that,' he said. Beatty succeeds Chief Darrel McCallum, who did not seek re-election. In other unofficial results, former Cumberland MLA Joan Beatty was elected councillor for Deschambault Lake along with Cornelius Ballantyne. Harvey Natewayes was re-elected councillor for Sandy Bay, joining newcomer Nora Bear. Eileen Linklater, Wesley Custer, Francis Highway, Arthur Dorion and Darren Linklater will represent Pelican Narrows. Richard Budd is the councillor for Sturgeon Landing as Kevin Morin and Simon Jobb will serve Southend. The urban councillor will be Warren McCallum.
