Kelly Carrington Staff Writer Extensive volunteer work with groups and events like the Trout Festival, Flinty Committee, Recycling Centre and Culture Days has earned Ron Dodds a spot on the Wall of Honour. At Flinty's 50th Birthday Party this past Sunday, he had his photo added to the Wall, which honours prominent residents in the Flin Flon Station Museum. Dodds has also been part of the Station Museum, Camp Whitney, Odd Fellows, First United Lutheran Church Council, United Steelworkers Summer Camp, Girl Guides and Beaver Lake Bible Camp. Over his years in Flin Flon, Dodds has been named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club and received a City of Flin Flon Volunteer Award. Earlier this year, he was in Winnipeg to accept the Premier's Volunteer Service Award. Also during Sunday's celebration, the Flinty Committee made an announcement on an upcoming project. The submarine display at Flinty's Park, near Ross Lake, will be replaced with a new display bearing a fresh design and colours. A new submarine, expected to last decades, will cost roughly $100,000. With the project in the early stages, a design concept has been devised with Flinty atop a smiling fish. The concept includes bright colours like blue, purple and green, but some changes are still to be made. Flinty Committee chair Dave Price says the new sub will have a steel frame, an EPS foam core and a hard polyurea coating. The colour of the display will be added through paint and airbrushing and will be protected by a graffiti- and UV-resistant clearcoat. Grant applications are already in the works for the project, though Price told those in attendance Sunday that any fundraising suggestions are welcome. The Flinty Committee hopes to install the new sub in 2013 for Flin Flon's 80th anniversary. Geocaching Meanwhile, Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce President Cory Eastman announced the arrival of 750 new geocache coins. The coins were sold at Flinty's Birthday Party with a few caches located throughout the event. The coin depicts landmarks and identifying items of the area.
