Submitted by Flin Flon RCMP The Flin Flon RCMP want to remind you to be vigilant against frauds and scams. Thousands of Canadians are defrauded each year. Scam artists are up to date and well organized and run by criminal organizations. Tips to recognize a scam or fraud: The caller is more excited than you are. The caller demands an immediate answer but refuses to send you anything in writing. You must pay fees or buy a product before you can collect your prize or obtain credit. You are asked for credit card or bank account numbers, or copies of personal documents - but you can get nothing legitimate in writing. You can only send payment by wire service or by courier. The price for a product is much less than the price for the same product on the open market. ÊYou are offered a large payment or reward in exchange for allowing the use of your bank account _ often to deposit cheques or transfer money. You receive an unexpectedly large cheque. The RCMP also ask members of the community to be on the lookout for elderly friends and loved ones who may have fallen victim to fraud or scams. Signs of victimization: ÊWithdrawn from normal activities Afraid to you about sudden changes in lifestyle Suddenly unable to afford household expenses ÊSpending longer amounts of time on the internet or the telephone. If you suspect you or someone you know has fallen victim to fraud please contact your local RCMP at 204-687-1423 or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
