Some residents in the Birchview area got an unpleasant surprise Halloween night that had nothing to do with ghosts or goblins. One or more vandals left a trail of slashed vehicle tires down the back alley shared by Bracken and Whitney streets on Friday night, damage police estimate is worth close to $1,000. "It could have been any number of people walking down the back lane," said Cst. Jeeve Brar. "We're not sure which direction they were heading." The vandalism reign damaged at least six vehicles, with the weapon of choice for the culprit or culprits being a knife. Tires were also slashed on a vehicle parked on Green Street near the back lane. Cst. Brar said these were the only incidents of reported vandalism on Halloween night, a time when acts of destruction have been known to rise. Flin Flon RCMP are asking anyone with information on the slashed tires to contact them at 687-7488 or the anonymous Manitoba Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS). Meanwhile, trick-or-treating was made safer this year thanks to emergency service personnel who volunteered to patrol the streets on Halloween. Under the Partners for Safety program, police, firefighters and ambulance crews drove around the community from 4-8 p.m., considered the peak time for trick-or-treating.
