Recent upgrades at the fire department and hoped-for upgrades at a seniors centre highlighted the latest Creighton Town Council meeting. At their May 8 meeting, council learned the Creighton Fire Dept. has purchased a new all-terrain vehicle and rescue trailer. In his report to council, Fire Chief Robert Larocque said the items were purchased with proceeds from fundraisers held by the department's rec club. 'With the growing amount of ATV enthusiasts in the area, the department felt it was a good investment,' he wrote. 'The ATV could also be used for brush fires when paired with the 4-wheel ATV trailer they purchased a few years ago.' In another matter, the town was asked to repair the shoddy cement pad in front of the North Sask Seniors Drop-In Centre on Main Street. In a letter, Sophie Riehl, secretary of North Sask Seniors, said the group is 'very concerned' with the pad and would like it repaired or replace. Twenty-five additional seniors signed the letter, which council referred to the committee level without comment. Other highlights from the council meeting: Council voted to continue renting a portion of the Creighton Sportex to Creighton Community School through to April of 2016. The fee will be $2,575 ($215 a month) in 2013-14, $2,650 ($221 a month) in 2014-15 and $2,725 ($227 a month) in 2015-16. A letter from SaskPower informed council the cost of bringing electricity to the planned Collins Street subdivision extension will be $25,200. A down payment of $6,300 is required before work begins. Council voted to hire Joy Capyk as general office clerk and Scott Rosenberger as a temporary public works labourer to assist with spring and summer projects. Council voted to continue renting a portion of the Recreation and Tourism building to Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation through to June of 2014. The rate will be $750 a month _ or $9,000 a year _ plus any applicable taxes. Fire Chief Larocque's report noted that Francis Wilcox has retired from the department following 14-plus years of service. Tony Flynn will take his place. Ald. Don Aasen commended the Creighton Fire Dept. for participating in the recent Family Fun Day at Creighton Community School. It was noted that the town also had equipment on display at the event. Council voted to raise the ice rental fee at the Creighton Sportex by $5 an hour effective this fall. Council voted to donate $100 to the local Relay for Life cancer-fighting fundraiser to be held later this year.
