The second phase in the Pioneer Square project is nearly complete. Dave Kendall says only a few details of the park are left this year. With Culture Days utilizing the square this past weekend, Kendall hoped to have one portion of the project completed. 'We're hoping to have an anode complete,' he said, noting the final zinc pour was hoped to be done before the events started. 'Basically an anode is a zinc pour,' he explains, 'and the final big piece of zinc is going to be in the park.' Though it wasn't set to be completed by this past weekend, Kendall still hopes to see an aviation model in Pioneer Square by the end of the season 'There's going to be a tribute to original aviation in the area,' he said. A 80' propellor will be mounted on one of the walls of Pioneer Square. The full-size propellor will also feature an information plaque on the wall beside it. During the summer months, a zinc art piece was hung on the wall of the park, but committee now sees a challenge. 'If you notice, the zinc is yellowing and that's from the chlorine that is added to the water,' said Kendall. Chlorine is added to the water to keep the pumps clean to keep the water in continuous motion. 'So, we're looking to see if there is a different additive we can use in the park or set up so the yellowish colour won't appear.' Following those projects the upgrades will be done for 2013, but Kendall says the committee will take the winter months to make a plan for the next phase. He hopes to see fundraising continue throughout the winter months. 'One of the things we're potentially looking at is a roof over the stage,' he said. Kendall says it has not been decided if the roof is a done-deal, but he says it's something the committee is thinking about. The committee is also toying with the idea of doing something with the rocks in the park. 'We're always open for suggestions,' Kendall said. The overall structure of Pioneer Square is complete, but the committee continues to upgrade details and the look of the park. Kendall says with all the small projects on top of the build of Pioneer Square the committee has managed to stay close to their budget. 'I think we're probably a few thousand dollars over, but nothing significant,' he said. 'We're pretty close to (the budget),' he said.
