A few minutes of magic can have a big impact.
Flin Flon Recycling Centre is coordinating the 20 Minutes of Magic clean-up campaign again this year.
The event will be held on Friday, May 13.
“It is a call-out to all community residents and businesses that are proud of this community to spend 20 minutes and clean up litter from public spaces,” said centre administrator Deb Odegaard.
People wanting to participate are asked to register with the recycling centre and let staff know where they are going to be cleaning, the date the cleanup is planned and the number of people participating.
The centre can be reached by email at [email protected] or by calling 204-687-6169. The recycling centre will also be accepting registrations at its booth at the CFAR Trade and Leisure Show this weekend.
People who participate in the cleanup and provide a photo of their haul will be entered into a draw for gift cards or certificates from North of 53 Consumers Co-operative, Eddie’s Family Foods, Home Hardware and Victoria Inn, “and hopefully a few more,” said Odegaard.
Participants should wear gloves and bright clothing, she added.
Odegaard is asking participants to help out by sorting what they pick up into different bags.
“In the process of cleaning up, separate recyclables from the garbage in order to facilitate getting them to the centre,” she said.
Recyclables – usually beverage containers – should be collected in translucent bag. Colour is not important, just that the contents can be seen through the bags. Garbage can be put into any colour opaque bag.
People can contact
the recycling centre for bags, if needed.
In the past, after the cleanup some participants dropped off their bags at the recycling centre. This year, the centre is working with the City of Flin Flon to arrange streetside pickup for both garbage and recyclables.
In Flin Flon, bags will be picked up on May 13 unless the recycling centre is notified that pickup is needed another day.
Odegaard says people living in other communities in the area are encouraged to participate, even though pickup is only available in Flin Flon.
Odegaard said that last year participants handled disposing of their own bags. “That’s fine,” she said, adding that she wants to remind people to take a photo of themselves participating in the cleanup, with their bags, or of the bags themselves before disposing of them in order to be entered into the draws.
Entries will be accepted by email at [email protected], and should include the name of the people who participated in the cleanup.
The project is co-sponsored by the recycling centre and Acklands Grainger.
